Understanding Pigment Types
Organic Pigments
Carbon-based molecules — often synthetic dyes fixed onto a substrate, or derived from plants and insects. Typically vibrant, transparent, and high-tinting. Many modern organics (quinacridones, phthalocyanines, perylenes) have excellent lightfastness. Historical organics (alizarin, carmine) tend to fade.
Inorganic Pigments
Mineral and metal-based compounds — including natural earths, metal oxides, and synthetic mineral pigments. Typically opaque, stable, and very lightfast. Earth pigments (ochres, umbers, siennas) have been used for millennia. Cadmiums and cobalts offer unmatched opacity and permanence.
Reading CI Codes
The Colour Index (CI) is an international standard identifying pigments by chemistry. A code like PB29 means Pigment Blue 29 (Ultramarine). Manufacturers can name a colour anything — but the CI code reveals the true pigment. Single-pigment paints (one CI code) mix more cleanly and predictably.
